Why January Sees a Surge in Shattered Dreams

Mar 21, 2024

If you've ever wondered why the ambitious goals set with zeal on January 1st tend to dwindle by mid-January, YOU ARE NOT ALONE

It's a phenomenon that never fails to boggle my mind.

Today, I want to share my insights into why this happens and offer a supplemental gem I've come across in my readings.

If you want the quick and dirty 3-minute version of this, check out my 3-minute ops tips video on why January sees a Surge in Shattered Dreams

The Habits Conundrum

As someone passionate about operations and the habits that shape our businesses, I see a direct correlation between personal habits and business success.

If you've explored the realm of habit-building, you might have stumbled upon "Atomic Habits" by James Clear – a transformative read, especially at the beginning of the year.

Operations as Business Habits

In my world, operations are essentially the habits your business cultivates.

The success of your business is intricately tied to the habits you, as the founder, instill.

It's a notion echoed by countless business coaches, and I firmly believe that our business's triumph is a reflection of our personal habits.

The Mid-January Quandary

Now, let's unravel the mystery of why those well-intentioned New Year's resolutions start losing steam by mid-January.

The answer may lie in the pace at which we attempt progress.

If, for example, you're not accustomed to regular workouts and you kick off the year with an intense 45-minute session, the initial euphoria might wane by day two when soreness sets in.

The Power of Incremental Progress

Here's the key – instead of aiming for monumental leaps, focus on consistent, incremental progress.

If saving money is your goal, start with a small amount, even if it's just a dollar.

The goal is to build the habit of contributing consistently.

These little building blocks create a solid foundation that outlasts the short-lived transformations of a single day.

The Habits We Keep

Consider this analogy: If you're sore after a workout, pushing through the discomfort for a few more days builds resilience.

Similarly, in your business or personal life, consistent, manageable habits contribute to long-term success.

If you find yourself wavering in your resolutions mid-January, reflect on whether you're attempting too much progress too quickly

Embrace the power of steady momentum. Even if it's a small step, it's a step forward.

Remember, the tiny, consistent building blocks you implement daily will propel you far beyond any one-day transformation.
